Why Will Demand for High Speed Doors Continue to Rise?

If you are looking for high speed doors for your premises then you are not alone. The applications of these doors have seen demand for them surge globally, so much so that the market value of HSD’s is predicted to reach US$ 1787.64 Million by 2031, thanks to a CAGR of 6.1% from 2022 to 2031.

These growing numbers speak for themselves, but what are the driving factors behind this increase in demand, and why is it happening over the next few years? Let’s find out.

1. Surge in Market Demand

Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global lockdown feels like a distant memory for many, its impact on global industries is still being felt. As countries continue to recover from the forced economic slowdown caused by business closures, halted supply chains, and delayed projects, there is an emphasis on fast recovery – and rapid action doors are one of the many resources that businesses are using to get their operations back on track.

A return to pre-pandemic levels of output and distribution requires the fast movement of goods across the supply chain, from manufacturing facilities right through to distribution centers. As modern consumers come to expect rapid shipping as standard, a key aim is not just to meet these pre-pandemic turnaround times but to exceed them, and HSD’s are already being installed in industrial, commercial, and manufacturing premises across the globe to keep up with this continuing demand.

2. Increased Speed

With increased speed becoming a top priority for global industries, there’s concern that outdated manual doors will (at best) struggle to meet demand and (at worst) pose safety concerns.

Fast-action doors not only prevent common hazards like collisions and accidents, but also keep operations moving quickly to meet industry demands. Both our Zip Speed Doors and Clean Room Speed Doors feature a built-in self-repairing system, and our Turbo Fold Doors include a safety light curtain as standard to correct any issues and prevent any knock-on delays.

Our doorsets are also compatible with a range of automated systems that make manual operation a task of the past, so combine our doors with your systems of choice and speed up your operations for years to come.

3. Rise of Automation

The growing demand for fast action doors is interlinked with the universal rise of automation across the 2020’s. Automation is up there right next to AI in the global ranking of impactful innovations that continue to change the way entire sectors operate, and automated high speed doors now account for 55.1% of the market share.

This huge percentage perfectly captures the demands for speed, efficiency, and ongoing innovation from both consumers and businesses. Automated rapid doors are operated without human intervention, and can be automated to open and close at different speeds, at a particular time, or once approved personnel are within a set distance. This means that workers don’t even need to slow down, let alone stop, when approaching a closed door, eliminating the need for human intervention and resulting in time savings across the supply chain.

4. Improved Energy Efficiency

It is not just the demand for rapid doors that is on the rise – the cost of heating, cooling, lighting, and securing premises has been steadily increasing for years and is unlikely to come back down in the near future.

Improving the energy efficiency of commercial and industrial buildings is one of the main ways businesses are keeping costs down, and high speed doors help to achieve this by reducing energy consumption. From maintaining stable indoor temperatures, to minimising air exchange during the loading and unloading process, their rapid mechanisms are the go-to choice for temperature-controlled facilities and busy industrial premises that rely on the continuous movement of goods and are often affected by the expensive temperature fluctuations caused by slow doors.

5. Regional Demand

Finally, one last important factor to keep in mind when examining the unprecedented demand for high speed doors is that this demand is global.

It is not everyday that we see a particular door become so sought-after, but there is no denying that every industry in the world has a use for rapid doors and is keen to make the most of them. The Asia Pacific region in particular is leading the demand with a CAGR of 5.1% that is driven by the regions’ focus on rapid industrialisation, and the US is not far behind. Thanks to the demand for fast delivery times and workflow productivity, the North American high speed doors market saw upwards of $0.5 billion in revenue in 2023, and these numbers are only predicted to increase as other countries follow suit and prioritise productivity into the early 2030s and beyond.

Industrial Door and Shutter Installation at Cotswold Airport

At the beginning of December, our skilled team completed a huge project at Cotswold Airport, which involved the installation of four industrial door systems, a large shutter installation and a cladding modification.

The famous airport, which was built for the RAF in 1936, has housed some of the most prestigious military divisions in the world, including the Red Arrows, the US Air Force and the British Army.

In recent times, the facility has been used for more commercial purposes, as its buildings are now home to many local businesses.

The airport has also featured on several popular TV programmes, including Top Gear, Casualty and Fifth Gear.

We were asked by Rapid Packing, who are one of the largest racking companies in the UK, to supply and install four high-speed doors to help improve their security and productivity.

Over a four-week period, we achieved this by installing three Turbo Fold doors, a Zip Speed door and a Tubular Shutter door.

Turbo Fold Doors

Turbo Fold doors were a great choice for this busy industrial environment, as they can open and close very quickly, allowing for a much higher level of traffic flow.

Besides being fast, rapid folding doors are also great for reducing heat loss, saving energy and managing noise contamination.

Zip Speed Doors

Similar to the Turbo Fold Doors, the installation of a Zip Speed door will significantly enhance the client’s efficiency and energy-saving capabilities.

Using a smart roll-up design, our Zip Speed doors will help to save vital time that was once lost waiting for slow, heavy roller shutter doors to open.

Additionally, they will act as a strong defence barrier against any airborne pollution that is created by military aircraft and vehicles that are outside.

One-off Shutter Installation

Besides installing new industrial doors, Rapid Packing also wanted us to replace their existing hangar doors, which were extremely thick and heavy and were a struggle to open and close daily.

Following the instructions of our client, we designed a new, more secure entrance to the hangar, along with supporting steelwork.

This new design included the installation of a one-off Premier 3 Phase Shutter and a single steel door set with cladded sheet infill, which we produced at our manufacturing facility in Smethwick.

Thanks to our installation, the team at Rapid Packing, who were very happy with our work and service, are now able to operate a lot more efficiently.

The 10 Top Features of a Turbo Fold High Speed Door

When choosing an appropriate high speed door system for your external or internal openings, there are many factors to consider to optimise and protect the flow of people, equipment and goods. Adaptable to diverse industrial environments, the Turbo Fold High Speed Door uses a simple, effective fold-up motion which cleverly collects the fabric curtain as it rises. Not only do Turbo doors improve operational functionality and safety, they also provide a number of other benefits to businesses looking to increase their environmental efficiency, security and performance in high traffic areas. Here are the top features of a Turbo Fold High Speed Door and its benefits for a variety of applications:

1. The ideal energy solution

Because of the extremely fast action of a Turbo door’s opening and closing cycle, the door will be open for a minimal time and only when necessary. As a result, heat loss will be greatly reduced, allowing for savings on energy usage and a better climate control for a comfortable working environment.

2. Faster operations

The fast action folding door is suitable for exterior or interior use, as a much quicker solution than conventional roller shutter doors. The Turbo door operates at 1 metre per second and uses new technologies to reduce waiting times and streamline material flow, transport and production and logistic processes.

3. Improving employee safety

Available in a range of sizes, the industrial Turbo door is designed for high traffic flow. As such, doors can include transparent vision panels in the curtain, to facilitate easy, safe and faster passage crossing.

4. Advanced detection

Photocells are built into the Turbo Fold High Speed Door vertical frame as standard. This means that the presence of a person or object in the vicinity of the door can be immediately detected, preventing the door from closing or returning to the top of its cycle if unsafe. Equally, the bottom rail of the Turbo Fold High Speed Door incorporates a self-monitoring safety edge to detect pressure during descent.

5. Minimal disruption to work flow

Like our other high speed door systems, if an object should become trapped within the door frame or the curtain becomes dislodged from its secure frame, the Turbo door will recover in one opening and closing cycle, helping to minimise disruption to work flow. This is extremely useful for areas in an industrial, commercial or retail facility where there is a high traffic flow.

6. Creating a better working environment

With a quiet operation, the Turbo door won’t be a distraction or nuisance for employees in its vicinity. Although lightweight, the Turbo door is resilient and will help to reduce noise contamination from the outside or adjoining areas. This is particularly beneficial if you’ll be using a high speed door for an external area where bad weather conditions could create a lot of noise.

7. Lowering contamination

The folding door will reduce drafts because of its tight sealing and minimal opening and closing time. You’ll also be able to more effectively protect any goods or equipment being stored, as the Turbo door reduces the risk of airborne pollution and dust deposits entering your facility.

8. Ease of use

The Turbo Fold High Speed Door requires low maintenance, and as a self-operated, automated system, it makes for a reliable, easy to use high speed door system.

9. Extremely resistant

Importantly, the Turbo door is highly durable and resistant to extreme exterior conditions. Wind tested to level 5, you can be sure that the Turbo door will provide excellent protection for your building against bad weather, for the long-term.

10. Versatile

There are a range of colour and size options available to suit your individual requirements. Colours can be matched to your company colours and vary from bright yellow through to grey.
